This is a great young adult paranormal; it is both fantasy and romance. It is well written and thoughtful, and the characters are well developed and not overly filled with teen angst though there is a bit of teenage emotion. Its premise is not exactly unique nor radically different from others of its kind but certain elements are different and rather interesting such as the "soulless" ones, a spiritual concept that has occurred to me on occasion as an explanation for some of the evil we see in the world. I also liked the concept of dark spirits as opposed to the popular religious idea of demons. While the "immortals" are nothing new and their making and qualities are derivative of a number of various legendary creatures or supernaturals imagined by others, they are still just a bit different in concept. The author's use of other legends such as Solomon's ring were well thought out and fit perfectly in the story. I'm definitely jonesing for book two!One small word of warning: This series is definitely only for older teens since it does have descriptions of premarital sex. The scenes are tasteful and not overly graphic and occur in a loving and committed relationship context so I would be ok with it for 16 and up, but some parents might be uncomfortable with it.

Beyond the Eyes Volume 1 Rebekkah Ford 9780615652580 Books Reviews
One of my New Year's resolution for 2014 is to give indie authors a shot and see what good books are hiding in self-publishing, if not obscurity.
Beyond the Eyes was reaffirming that I made a good decision there. It is a solid YA paranormal romance that is developing an intriguing mythos and characters with personality. The first book is obviously setting some things in motion for readers to follow into next books while offering some resolution within the novel itself.
I think Nathan, the love interest in this book comes off as attentive without being overbearing or creepy - which sometimes unintentionally manifests in YA. I can see why some readers would project on him as "ideal boyfriend" material and didn't find the romantic plot in this to feel superficial or forced.
The adolescent characters - specifically Paige and her friends - spoke in a way that was consistent to their ages, expected maturity and lifestyles. I'm sure some readers might find it grating or lackluster but I felt there was an authenticity there that might go under appreciated. Teenagers aren't as complicated or self-aware as adults so there was sincerity to their tones and motivations at times.
I'm sure some people will complain about the grammar or typos in this but they weren't so numerous or jarring that it pulled me out of the novel. I don't think it's fair to deduct a star from a self-published book that lacked the same editing as one from a publishing house, especially if it the story compensates for the oversights.
I feel Beyond the Eyes is an entertaining read for anyone who is a fan of the YA genre and paranormal romance.

Review
Beyond the Eyes is a paranormal romance written by Rebekkah Ford. Paige is a girl growing up in the mountains of Oregon. She is already having paranormal experiences when she meets Nathan at a night club. That’s when the paranormal world that exists along side her normal one comes crashing into her life. She finds dark spirits are interested in her because they think she can find the legendary Ring of Solomon. This is an artifact that can give the wearer control of dark spirits. Her father was looking for it, and the dark spirits killed him. Nathan is an immortal who is attracted to Paige and has sworn to protect her.
The story has an interesting premise of what happens when you are offered immortality. However, the action is bogged down in unnecessary detail, slowing the action of the story. The romantic interest between Paige and Nathan was somewhat cliché. It seems to be a variant on the Twilight theme. On the other hand, the characters were likable, and there is just enough mystery at the end to make me curious as to what happens next.
