I have long been a fan of the Michelin Green Guide series to regions in France. The updated Normandy guide is stunning in its layout and in its 462 pages of content, largely focused on Normandy. Other good guides exist--notably Lonely Planet and Fodors...but they treat Brittany and Normandy in the same volume.

Of course, the Dukes of Normandy and William the Conqueror are discussed and there is a good general timeline of history of the region. 2014 is the 70th Anniversary of D-Day so the guide features a very usable section containing a chronology of events of that day and in the few weeks thereafter as the Allied invasion gained momentum (pp 56-9.) We have taken a battlefield and cemetery tour with a military historian and this summary will enable you to do something very similar on your own if you wish to. Moving into the guide book, there are fine illustrations throughout, including some showing typical Normandy architectural styles for farmhouses, town houses, churches and the like. Informative paragraphs put the styles in perspective and make developments understandable.

The guide breaks the region down into logical bits of geography, beginning by dividing the Provence into Upper and Lower parts and subdividing from there. The authors describe each part in sufficient detail so that readers can decide where they might like to visit and what they might like to see. The very manageable city of Rouen, with its fine Gothic cathedral, Caen (capitol and cultural center), Bayeux (with the famous tapestry chronicling the Battle of Hastings), the seaside town of Honfleur (loved by Impressionist painters and Mont St. Michel are just a few places most of us want to visit. I have visited each of these places and find this guide to be accurate and useful and as I found things 'on the ground.' The places are well-described here, with local maps of city centers and, quite often, the outline of a walking tour. The guide presents many other places of interest that I have never heard of. My top pick here is a region called 'Perche', home of the Percheron breed of work horses. The city to see is Verneuil-sur-Avre (one star, but read the description.) Most of the area seems to be a national forest park, so scenery abounds. The guide also recommends places to eat and places to stay in this area.

As usual, places of interest are indicated by starred symbols for 'highly recommended', 'recommended' and 'interesting.' A good many driving tours are suggested and mapped out in a general and usable way (but also get GPS or a detailed Michelin road map if you are taking any of them.) There is also good coverage of suggested biking and hiking tours.

I was surprised to find that this is also the guide to get if you want to visit the Channel Islands (Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey and the like.) They are British possessions (or held by the Queen as "Duke of Normandy.") Here the information does run to hotels and restaurants.

While the Green Guides tell you what to see and where to go, they do not aim to provide information on hotels, lodging, food or restaurants. Michelin publishes a Red Guide for that, covering all of France. Some reviewers might rate this guide lower for those omissions and some readers might prefer to get food and lodging information in the same volume, such as provided by Lonely Planet and Fodors, but I think the 2014 Michelin Green Guide is just about the finest guide of its type for Normandy.

I am visiting Paris for a month and will take 3 days to visit Normandy. this was essential reading.
The print is painfully small but the information is good. My family and I found it useful while we were in Normandy.
We always use the Michelin guides for our travels and this didn't disappoint. It really helps us to plan our trips well.
Well done guide book with tips and itineraries between the small cities...
A great guide. Took portions of it to France; used to supplement online directions. Gives many detailed options; up-to-date. kcv
Wow, almost too much information. I can't read it all in one sitting. We are traveling to Normandy and this book has been a great guide to the area. The detail in history, along with the preplanned trips allow you to see more. We were traveling to see the beach landing areas, but there is so much more history to be seen right in this area, we are so glad we purchased this guide and will purchase more as we travel throughout Europe.
